“The Leeter Tunku” Edition Tintenfaß

This is very interesting book. As we can see on the front page, it is written in “Singlish”. I can only guess “Leeter” may come from the pronunciation of “little” changed into Singlish (Singapore+English) and  “Tunku” may mean “Prince”. I checked on the web and found out that it is a Malay word for prince. Other than those, there are a lot of words in the text which I can only guess they may come from Chinese, Malay or probably from Tamil languages. Singapore really has a unique mixed culture!

The other thing which I am interested in is the chart at the end of the book which shows “how to say ‘Little Prince’ in different languages” . Although the font is very small and for my aged eyes it is a bit difficult to read, I found it quite interesting. This list contains 109 languages, including Morse code!…..but not Japanese…I wonder why it doesn’t have Japanese nor Chinese (it may have them but I couldn’t find them…). Maybe the problem with fonts?

Anyway, just for information, literal translation of “Little Prince” in Japanese is 小さな王子 (Chiisana Ouji), but the Japanese version of this book in general has slightly different title, 星の王子さま (Star Prince). (see the front page of the book)

いろいろな意味で、ちょっとショックを受けた本。表紙の左下にあるように、Singlish「シングリッシュ（シンガポール風英語）」版の『星の王子様』。まず、タイトルからして、よくわからない！！Leeterはたぶん英語の little をシンガポール風に発音した「リートゥ」みたいのをまた文字に戻したもの（？）。Tunk は「王子様」なんだろうな、と察しはつくけれど、ウェブで調べてみてやっとわかった。マレー語で王子様の意味。ほかに、おそらく中国語の「那」から来たと思われる nah という言葉など、本文中にも意味がわからない単語、続出。要するに、英語に中国語とマレー語が入り混じっている。おそらく、タミール語も混じっているのだと思うが、当ウェブ管理人には見分けがつかない。シングリッシュ恐るべし！　と感嘆するばかり。

巻末にある「いろいろな言葉で Le Petit Prince（フランス語原題）を何というか」、というリストも面白い。でも、109個の言語が載っていて、モールス信号での言い方まで載っているのに、日本語がどうしても見つけられない（活字が小さくてよく見えない！）。中国語も載っていないみたい。もっとよくみたら見つかるかもしれないけれど。ハワイ語まで載っているんだよ～。どうして日本語がない？
